The Tin Man

šŸƒ My reinterpretation of the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, imagined as a forgotten version who never met his companions and slowly faded away in the forest.

This project was created for Ecole MOPA and became my first full environment project in Houdini. It was a great opportunity to explore prop-based character design, cloth and groom simulations, and a semi-realistic art direction using Renderman.

I learned a lot throughout the process and had an amazing time bringing this darker take on the character to life.

A close-up and different angle, imagined to get closer to the ground and better show his integration with the grass.

The turnarounds, with and without moss, acorns, and grass, along with the wireframe.

The compositing process, with the turnarounds at the end

Some thumbnails and design explorations - I knew from the start that I wanted his axe to be his leg, making it feel like he had repaired himself with whatever he could before dying

As for the colors, since purple and green work well together, I aimed for a nostalgic feel, with a touch of warmth to evoke pity for the character.

I already had a clear vision for the composition. With the ā€œSā€ shape in the grass made by his axe, suggesting he dragged himself to the tree

The turnarounds were a real challenge to figure out how the fabric would hold the leg
